Tokyo Thyme

31 Jul

sushiGood food. Good sushi. What more could I say? Just love what they did as they turned the ordinary ingredients into a special dish like their House Special Sunomono (the one that wrapped with a thin cucumber skin). There were crab, prawn, smoked salmon, yamaimo (a kind of Japanese yam) and avacado inside the roll. They were covered with a layer of slight vinegary sauce with seaweed. This is a very refreshing dish to have, especially in summer. Tuna Delight is another dish that stands out from the others. It is made of red tuna, green onion and Japanese mint. The taste of the mint is quite dominant, if you do not like the taste of mint, you might not like this dish. But I found this is perfect for me as I love the taste of it, it came along well with tuna.

For me, taste is a kind of subjective thing. Someone might like mint and others might not. Afterall, I am writing with my point of view.

Memphis Blues Barbeque House

30 Jul

Ribs and BrisketsI have heard many good reviews about Memphis Blues on different Vancouverites’ food blog. And I have been dreaming about going there since last year. Sadly, I do not have enough carnivores friends that could bear to eat a meal with just meat. I think I have to emphasize they are delicious meat. Seriously, I recognized this because my dream came true on last week. I went to the Memphis Blues on Commercial Drive with two of my friends during lunch (that’s the time when I found out they got sandwiches, too) One of my friends won’t eat pork. So, she just had a BBQ chicken sandwich. I shared a choice of two meats combo with my other friend. At first I was hesitated whether should I get the ribs or not because I have ate ribs before, I think I knew what ribs are liked – they are dry, immersed with sticky sauce and with lots of bones. But I am totally wrong, this one is the opposite of my definition of ribs. These are tender, soft and fresh with a slight barbeque taste. The barbeque sauce on the side is a bonus, you can dip whenever you feel liked. The briskets are not as good because those pieces are a bit dry. The beans are good, and again, I seldom like beans (as their mushy texture)/ But these ones got so much barbeque flavor in it, I think I am addicted to BBQ sauce (is that the reason why so many people are happy when the McRibs is back?). I am happy with this meal and I hope I could make some meat eaters friend in the future so that I can come back again.

Elysian Coffee

30 Jul

Elysian AmericanoI have been a coffee addict since I came to Vancouver. Luckily, I just drink one type of coffee – Americano. Not Latte, not Cappuccino or Frappuccino. As I am not that interested in coffee with too much milk. Elysian Coffee is one of top 3 favourite places to have coffee. I have witness from a cup of $2.50 Americano to a cup of $2.75 and recently, a cup of Americano costs $3.15 there. And I recognized their cups now got their own logo. Maybe that is why a cup of coffee would cost more. I am amazed of how fast food prices ran up nowadays compared to ten years ago. Maybe we should be thankful that the inflation in Canada is not like the one in Zimbabwe or China.
